The most common objection that you will get in politics is: “Why should I care?” I always made sure to ask volunteers this question when they came into the office for orientation. Their answers were always different, but they always gave me hope.
Campaigns are won call by call, neighbor by neighbor. Behind every single vote is a complex human being with different experiences and different values. They will try to convince you just as much as you try to convince them. If you can’t knock on their door and explain why your work matters in 30 seconds or less, you will lose every single time.
This year the Progressive Caucus of the Young Democrats of Georgia will launch our new publication, A Progressive Georgia. We hope to elevate the next generation of leadership and provide a forum where community organizers can share the work that they are doing and why it matters.
We hope that our insights will help the party move forward and chart a vision for the future. Democrats came up short in 2024 because we failed to answer the question: “Why should I care?” We plan to answer this question loudly and clearly.
I encourage any of my colleagues, past and present, to reach out to me if they wish to contribute to this project. We hope to publish policy briefs, op-eds, and interviews with community leaders as we collectively navigate uncharted waters in American politics.
